:
I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-
Eur Ea
ledge the receipt of your letter No. 79/S. of the
29th. ultimo regarding the treatment of enemy subjects
resident in Shamien,
Sir E. Grey understands that all Germans and
Austrians of military age in Hongkong have been in-
terned and it seems to him reasonable to suppose that
eny reservists who may have been in Shamien have gone
to Tsingtau. The element of danger arising from the
proximity of this district to Hongkong cannot there-
fore be very great.
In view of the considerations expressed in Sir
Sm/37799
F. May's despatch of August 15th, copy of which was
do do.
enclosed in your letter of the 9th. ultimo, it appears
to
he Under Secretary of State,
